The forceful spray rendered in bold brushstrokes captures the fleeting beauty of moving water—an image deeply rooted in Japanese culture and aesthetics. Water itself symbolizes life and purity, while its spray expresses both the power and transience of those qualities. As seen in iconic works such as Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa and the abstract evocations of water in kare-sansui dry gardens, this motif has long been essential to Japanese art. In classical poetry—waka and haiku alike—water spray often serves as a metaphor for impermanence and delicate beauty. During festivals and rituals, it signifies cleansing and harmony with nature, adding a sense of exhilaration and reverence. Its ephemerality embodies mujōkan, the Japanese awareness of life’s transience, making it a cultural symbol cherished from ancient times to the present.
