Create your color with us -custom noren-

Bring your color into your space.

Together, let us craft a noren in a shade the world has never seen.

Please provide the following information when ordering a noren curtain.

Place of use

Example: A busy storefront entrance exposed to direct sunlight.

Size (W × H)

Kindly establish the noren proportions with regard to the span of the doorway, the ceiling height, and the extent to which you wish to veil the line of sight (e.g., full-length, waist-height).

  • Width As a rule of thumb, specify a finished width equal to the opening itself, allowing a tolerance of ± 1–3 cm.
  • Length Adjust the hem so that it aligns gracefully with the underside of the counter or hovers approximately XX cm above the floor, according to your preference.
When employing multiple panels, please allow a modest margin on either side of the overall width—total width = combined panel width + left- and right-hand clearance—to ensure the curtain hangs in an impeccably neat line.

Example: 180 cm (W) × 120 cm (H)

Number and placement of slits (panel joins)

When determining the number of vertical openings, weigh three elements in concert: practical convenience, anticipated foot-traffic flow, and overall visual harmony.

Illustrative scenario ─ 180 cm entrance noren

  • Intended location: Shop threshold
  • Traffic pattern: As patrons typically enter through the centre, we generally recommend configuring two or three slits so that at least one opening aligns perfectly with the primary line of passage.
  • Design refinement: Should a prominent emblem be positioned at the centre, a slit may bisect the motif. To preserve its integrity, you may, for example, narrow the flanking panels and broaden the middle one (e.g., 55 cm : 70 cm : 55 cm), ensuring the logo appears in its entirety.

Traditionally, an odd number of slits (3, 5, 7 …) is regarded as auspicious.

Example: Tapestry (0slit, 1 panel), Yellow (1slit, 2 panels), Brown (2slits, 3panels)

Rod channel style

We offer two refined finishing styles: a discreet rod pocket (fukuro-nui) and elegant fabric loops (chichi-tsuke). Kindly select the option most compatible with your installation method—whether a tension rod, a bamboo pole, or another support.

Standard specification

Both styles are normally executed with a 6 cm double turn, accommodating poles up to Ø 3 cm.

For poles exceeding Ø 3 cm (rod pocket)

We will be pleased to enlarge the pocket, calculating its depth as rod diameter + approximately 3 cm of clearance to ensure effortless installation.

For fabric loops (chichi-tsuke)

Please note that the total curtain drop equals loop length + panel length. Kindly indicate your preferred loop length when confirming the final dimensions.

Should you have any special requirements, we invite you to inform us at the quotation stage so we may determine the precise allowances and corresponding costs with the utmost care.

Fabric — 5 cotton options or 1 linen option

We are pleased to offer a curated suite of six natural fabrics—five refined 100 % cotton weaves and one pristine 100 % linen. When selecting a cloth, kindly reflect on the installation environment, the tactile character you wish to convey, and the desired level of translucency.

Should you envisage a different mood or seek a season-specific textile, simply outline the atmosphere you would like to create (for example, “a crisp, feather-light weave for midsummer”), and our atelier will be delighted to propose suitable alternatives.

Linen: Kibira Linen

Cotton: Hanpu canvas, Slub-yarn, Butcher, Tasser and Oxford

Colour

Choose a principal hue together with any accent shades, ensuring that each selection harmonises eloquently with your exterior façade, interior appointments, and prevailing illumination.

Should you desire an exact tint, we invite you to browse the Japanese Traditional Colours – Wa-shoku Daijiten (https://www.colordic.org/w) and advise us of your preferred shade. Our atelier will then prepare a set of trial swatches in that tone, from which you may graciously select the definitive colour.

Please be aware that, owing to the nature of artisanal dyeing, the final work may exhibit a subtle variance in tone when compared with the sample.

Design

We will curate the placement of your emblem with meticulous attention to negative space, ensuring an impeccably balanced composition.

Please consult the five layout exemplars provided for inspiration.

Should you already have a preferred design or arrangement, kindly furnish us with either an Illustrator file or a refined hand-drawn sketch.

Concept yet to be conceived

Should you wish to embark on the creative journey from the very beginning, we would be honoured to collaborate with you in shaping an exquisite noren. Please feel free to contact us at your convenience.

Font

Should you wish to feature your shop or product name upon the noren, kindly select a typeface—be it semi-cursive (Gyōsho), Minchō, Gothic, or another style—that harmonises with the atmosphere you envisage.

Because legibility from a distance is paramount, we recommend outlining each character in a weight that is neither overly dense nor excessively fine. Please allow the strokes to be rendered slightly bolder than usual to accommodate the minute spreading or discharge that can occur during the dyeing process.

Dyeing method

Roketsuzome- White Ground with Dyed Characters

We trace your full-size artwork in water-based ink, encircle each outline with hot wax to keep the background pristine, then hand-brush colour within these waxed borders. The resulting crackle may extend slightly beyond the lines, enriching the artisanal look.

Key points

  • Minimum stroke width: 3–5 mm.
  • Sharp points or rigid straight lines are better suited to other techniques; silk screen printing.
  • Should colours fade with sunlight, we can re-dye the noren to its original depth.

Roketsuzome- Dyed Ground with White Lettering

We brush hot wax inside the hand-drawn outlines (full-scale, water-based sketch), then dye the entire cloth. The lettering remains white, accented by the fine crackle patterns unique to wax-resist.

Guidelines

  • Minimum stroke width: 3–5 mm.
  • Very sharp points or rigid straight lines are better achieved with another method; wax-resist yields softly tapered strokes.
  • Should sunlight fade the colours over time, we can re-dye the noren to restore its depth.

Silk-Screen Printing (single-sided)

Your logo is applied in pigment ink onto a plain-dyed cloth, capturing crisp lines and sharp edges.

  • Screen fee Included in the first order; later reprints of the same design incur no screen charge. We archive the screen for up to ten years, and you may change fabric or colours at any time.
  • Care Should the ground colour fade, we can re-dye it while leaving the print intact.
  • Lightfastness Pigment ink is highly UV-resistant; for very sunny locations, a white or natural base fabric is best.
