An onsen noren is a traditional Japanese fabric divider hung at the entrance of hot-spring baths and public bathhouses. Its primary purpose is to distinguish between the men’s and women’s bathing areas: blue or indigo curtains mark the men’s side, while red or pink curtains indicate the women’s side. Typical designs feature the “♨” symbol, the character yu (湯, “hot water”), or iconic Japanese motifs such as cherry blossoms and Mount Fuji, lending the facility both serenity and cultural character.

Beyond safeguarding privacy, the noren serves as a visual emblem that reflects the local history and identity of the establishment. Usually made from cotton or linen and often dyed with traditional techniques, onsen noren embody craftsmanship as well as function. Today they are valued not only for their practical role but also as decorative accents in homes and shops, encapsulating the essence of Japanese culture.
