Noren -ゆ- Japanese curtain

Yu noren are traditional Japanese curtains hung at the entrances of hot-spring resorts and public bathhouses. Their primary purpose is to distinguish men’s and women’s baths—blue or navy typically marking the men’s side, while red or pink denotes the women’s side. These curtains often bear the hiragana ゆ or the kanji 湯 for “hot water,” along with emblematic Japanese motifs such as cherry blossoms or Mount Fuji, adding both tranquility and cultural color to the setting. Beyond providing privacy, a yu noren serves as a symbol of the establishment, reflecting the local character and history of the area. Usually woven from cotton or linen and dyed with traditional techniques, yu noren today are appreciated not only for their practical function but also as decorative accents in homes and shops, embodying the essence of Japanese culture.
